Trauma training
We recently finished leading another iteration of the Trauma Competent Caregiver training.
This training, created by Trauma Free World, is the first step in the process to become a volunteer mentor for a teenager living in residential care. Thanks to the Cumbre ACH summit held in March (shared about in our last update), we were able to share our vision for the mentoring program with individuals and churches across Lima and many expressed interest in learning more about how to serve as a mentor and the trauma training.
The training is 20 hours of material spread over 5 weeks, and due to the amount of participants we were able to open both in-person and virtual cohorts. The in-person trainings met on Saturday mornings from 9am - 1pm while the virtual group met on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 8 - 10pm. It’s safe to say that after multiple sessions and cohorts, Billy is very familiar with presenting the training material now!
There were 44 people who participated and finished the TCC training, and a number of which have expressed interest in continuing the application process to become a mentor. Currently Billy and Jocabeth are meeting with those that have filled out the application or have further questions about the program and its commitment.
Join us in praying for these individuals as they discern a calling to serve as a mentor.
In addition to the regular mentor visits at the Puericultorio Pérez Araníbar, as an organization we also host quarterly social events for the residents. All of the teens at the home are invited, whether they currently have a mentor or not. Our hope is that through these events, we can get to know the residents and for them to get to know our team and the mentoring program strengthen our shared sense of community.
Previous social events have included cupcake decorating, water balloon games, and watercolor painting. This time we hosted an afternoon movie to watch Wonder and discuss it afterward. The night before we prepared many bags of popcorn.
The mentors, staff and teens enjoyed the afternoon, and we are looking forward to the next event in a few months.
