Staff training in boys' homes has begun!
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
What a joy it is when we begin to see the results of what God has been preparing for us to do! That is what is happening this summer at Paths of Hope: Billy Greenman and our partners at Health Bridges International (HBI) have begun training the staff at two homes for abandoned and at-risk boys in Ica and Urubamba. The training focuses on “trauma-informed care” and seeks to set a new standard of care not only for these homes, but also for children’s homes across Peru. This is one piece of the Center of Excellence Program, a 5-year study being conducted in partnership with HBI. Every Tuesday and Wednesday Billy and other trainers meet with each home for 90 minutes to lead a training on best practices for working with the children in the home. As of right now, the training program is 10 modules with 5 weeks per module.
God has been preparing Billy Greenman beforehand for this role through his years of being in charge of the boys’ homes operations for Scripture Union. The two homes in Ica and Urubamba were previously operated by Scripture Union, but are now operated by HBI. Many of you have traveled to these homes, have your fingerprints in the bricks, and have led Vacation Bible School on the grounds. In addition to his experience, Billy has received his Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Wheaton College and has completed training with Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and the Advanced Trauma Competent Care training from Trauma Free World to further increase his care and counseling with young people who have lived with trauma and at-risk situations.
Billy, his wife Kate and son Will have been in the United States for the summer, but the work with training has continued, along with planning for mentor training in churches when they return to Peru at the end of July. While in the U.S., Billy and Kate were able to join the Board of Directors of Paths of Hope in person for our board retreat. Thanks to the wonders of technology, we were also able to have our Peruvian employees, Linda and Jocabeth, join in for one of our board sessions. They have been a great encouragement to Billy and our Board, and their work enables mentoring and church connections to continue to be strengthened. Billy and Kate were also able to meet with several donors for a fun evening of singing hymns, and to speak with potential donors to share the opportunities the Lord is preparing for us.
Your financial and prayer support for Paths of Hope have opened many doors in Peru as we guide and support young adults to pursue God’s purposes for their lives.
